HARLEY QUINN VOL. ane: HOT IN THE CITY by Amanda Conner, Jimmy Palmiotti, Republic of chad Hardin, Stephane Roux, Alex Sinclair, and Paul Mounts
Collects Harley Quinn #0-viii

In Batman's 75 years of beingness, not every character introduced in the pages of his comic books has caught on. What's more than remarkable is when a grapheme introduced outside of the printed pages finds an audience. 1 such example is Harley Quinn. She was introduced over 20 years agone on Batman: The Blithe Series and her popularity continues to grow. The starting time collection of her solo adventures in The New 52 is the field of study of today'due south review and information technology was one heck of a ride.

Scribes Jimmy Palmiotti and Amanda Conner bring Harley to life in means few writers other than her creator, Paul Dini, can. The book they've concocted is fun, whimsical, fierce, and loaded with irreverent humor and frenetic action. They've also wisely created a supporting cast that complements her rather well. It'south all brought to life by the robust artwork of Republic of chad Hardin and Stephane Roux.

The volume starts off with the the star-studded nada consequence, featuring art from such greats as Jim Lee, Tony Daniel, Bruce Timm, and Adam Hughes. This portion is essentially a meta-textual story that sees Harley cull the artist for her comic volume in a dream sequence. Basically, each creative person gets one folio to contribute before she finally decides that Republic of chad Hardin is the way to go. Not only that, she communicates with the volume'due south writers! When she awakens, she learns that she has inherited a building in New York's Coney Island area. Joining her on her adventure is a blimp beaver friend that but she can hear.

On her way to Coney Island, she "rescues" a domestic dog. In fact, a good portion of the books portrays her as a lover of the furry kind and an animal rights crusader. I institute this a bit odd because she associated herself with the Joker for and then long and I'm sure he'due south killed his share of four-legged friends in addition to a multitude of humans. Despite my enjoyment of this book, I couldn't ignore the fact that we're essentially sympathizing for a villain and Batman wouldn't approve of much of annihilation she does.

The flat building she has inherited is filled with sideshow freaks, main amidst which is a little person named Large Tony, who looks like a shorter version of Nathan Explosion. She must find a fashion to pay the edifice's bills and takes a chore every bit a psychiatrist at a senior abode. In addition to that, she lands a gig as a roller derby girl. To complicate matters, someone has put out a hit on her! She takes downward 1 would be assassin afterwards another throughout the story.

Several characters pop in to share the spotlight. The most notorious would have to be Poison Ivy, who get-go stops by to partake in some hilarious hijinx. Fans of the Harley-Ivy friendship should be thrilled to know that Ivy ends up playing a big part in the story. Geriatric commando Syborg also drags Harley into an amusing side story. The subplots luckily don't detract from the primary plot and, believe me, I didn't encounter the twist concerning the identity of who put a price on Harley'due south head coming.

The final affiliate wraps upwardly some of the pocket-size plot points. She finally gets to derby, merely gets kicked out of the league. We get a teaser for an underground Skate Club, then we'll have to see where that goes in the future. I won't spoil all the details of the "scatapult" for you, which needs to be seen to exist believed. Before endmost, a new threat presents itself. Hey, we need a reason to come up back, right?

Supplemental material includes: variant and reprint cover galleries and a await at some sketch artwork.

Take information technology from someone who admittedly isn't much of a Harley Quinn fan: I enjoyed this volume much more I thought I would. If I could capeesh it this much, I can only imagine how much 18-carat fans of the character must love it. I'm already looking forward to reading the next volume. Score: viii.5/10
